In episode 11 of the Handmade CEO, I had the chance to interview Corky of KAC Studios. Initially, I fell in love with a pendant light fixture that he designed that looks like a large bolt. Corky has a way of taking everyday objects and transforming them into pieces of art. Leaving a career with ABC Disney to pursue his passion, Corky explains the perks and motivation to start his own business.
During our talk, we discussed everything from finding creativity to the difficulty of marketing your work. In many cases, creative entrepreneurs find that marketing IS their biggest struggle. It’s hard to find a happy medium between marketing, listing, emails, shipping, youtube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, and providing excellent customer service, all while being creative.
If I could offer advice in this arena, I would say that the best thing to do is to hire someone finding creativity who is good at the things that you don’t like to do or that you don’t have time to do. There are a lot of great sources like LinkedIn, Fiverr, and Upwork.
If you don’t feel like you’re able to hire someone, the next best thing is to carve out a few hours a week to do that specific task that you dread doing.
With time you’ll get better at marketing, posting, listing, or whatever it is that you dislike. Many artists would benefit from a finding creativit sales person making calls to buyers. So if that sounds like something that you’re naturally gifted at doing, I would highly recommend getting in touch with local artists. I bet this could be a side hustle that would benefit both your income and that of a local artist I’m sure it would be a fruitful partnership!
Corky is offering 20% off on any of his products with the code Handmade20.
